As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2016, we have been sharing the stories of adi Apprentices – past and present – and how they got involved in engineering. In today’s blog, we sat down with James Jennings, who has progressed from Apprentice to Electrical Supervisor within adi’s Electrical Division.
What apprenticeship did you do and how long did it take to complete?
I completed an advanced modern electrical apprenticeship and it took 4 years to complete.
During your apprenticeship what kinds of projects did you support and what type of work did you undertake on a daily basis?
I took part in a variety of projects mainly based with the adi team at Bournville under the guidance of John Evans and Martin Stevens. Bournville was a great place to learn as an apprentice because the jobs varied from Industrial electrics (as in the electrical installation of food production lines) to commercial electrics (as in working in the offices) so I was able to advance my knowledge in a whole range of skills which has benefited me in my career.
What made you decide to do an Apprenticeship?
I completed a week’s work experience at an electrical company during high school and enjoyed my time there so decided to pursue it as a career.
How has completing an Apprenticeship benefitted you in your career so far?
As a result of completing my apprenticeship, I have gained the necessary skills to assist me in completing jobs of all sizes to the highest of standards.
What is your role now after completing an Apprenticeship?
I’m now a Site Supervisor for adi’s Electrical division looking after projects at a large drinks manufacturing company.
What advice would you give to youngsters looking into engineering apprenticeships?
There are many benefits to completing an apprenticeship, you get tailored training in your chosen career path and you also earn a wage whilst attending both work and college.
