Apprentice Blog: Rising To The Top
It’s National Apprenticeship Week 2016 across the UK and we’re celebrating our Apprentice Academy Apprentices. In today’s hot seat, we are delighted to invite adi’s Craig Mulligan as a guest blogger to talk about his progression from a Business Administration Apprentice to a full-time member of the adi QHSE team.
My name is Craig Mulligan and I am 21 years old. Less than three years after completing my Business Administration Apprentice I am now a full-time member of the adi team working in the fantastic QHSE Team at adi’s head offices in Kings Norton.
After finishing my A-levels and leaving school, I knew I wanted to do something in the field of administration. I didn’t feel like university was right for me, but had no idea how to go about training for a job role. After a few weeks wondering where to start, I attended a careers fair and met a representative from adi Group.
The more I heard about the apprenticeships offered at adi, the more I realised that it was the ideal solution. The opportunities available far exceeded anything I had come across elsewhere, and I was delighted when I was accepted into the apprenticeship programme.
adi Group tailored my apprenticeship contract so that I was exposed to all sections of Group Services, ensuring that I gained the practical experience to correspond with the subjects I would be studying during my days at college.
Having spent time in several different areas of the business, I gained a better understanding of the function of the various teams and how each process connects together across every individual department of adi, from start to finish.
At the end of 2014, I was awarded adi’s Apprentice of the Year Award. It was an incredible feeling to be recognised for the progress I’d made, and the loyalty I feel for the company.
This January, less than three years after beginning my apprenticeship, I was offered a full-time position as part of the IT&QA team (information technology and quality assurance) – the department which I had most wanted to join.
The last few years have been an incredible journey – I haven’t just developed in my career, but I genuinely feel like my time with adi Group has helped me to grow and mature as an individual. As well as job specific skills, I’ve also developed personal skills like communication and relationship building, which make me a more rounded employee.
Looking back, I feel very lucky that I found the right path for me, and I wish that I had been more aware of the benefits of apprenticeships when I first left school. I would wholeheartedly recommend the experience, especially with a company as nurturing as adi Group, and look forward to continuing my career with the business.
